One dead in Sunday night crash in Bartow County

A Polk County woman has been charged in a deadly wreck on I-75 at Groovers Landing in Bartow County just before midnight Sunday.

According to the Georgia State Patrol, a 2013 Chevrolet Impala was stopped in the right-hand northbound lane.

The driver was under the influence of alcohol and was improperly stopped in the roadway.

A tractor-trailer was in the right lane and swerved in an unsuccessful attempt to avoid striking the Impala.

The tractor-trailer struck the left side of the Chevy, left the east side of the road and struck a 2000 Honda Accord that was parked in the east side emergency lane.

The tractor-trailer then pushed the Accord into a guardrail, and went through the guardrail.

The Honda came to an uncontrolled final rest in the right lane facing westbound with the tractor-trailer coming to rest on top of it.

A passenger in the Honda, 56-year old Bobbie Whitman of Emerson was killed.

The driver of the Honda, Robert Whitman of Emerson was injured and transported to Kennestone Hospital and is in critical condition.

An 8-year old in the Honda and the driver of the tractor-trailer were not injured.

The driver of the Impala, 73-year old Evelyn Nowell of Cedartown was transported to Cartersville Medical Center.

She was charged with driving under the influence, 1st-degree homicide by vehicle, and improper slowing or stopping on the roadway.
